Mariachi

Instrumentation (open but not limited to)

Voice, Flute, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Violin, Viola, Harp, Accordion, Vihuela, Guitarron, Guitar, Bass.

Overview:

The Mariachi Ensemble is an introductory course in which students will explore the “sound” of Mexico. Traditionally, the music of country people; Mariachi music celebrates the joys, struggles and triumphs of everyday life. Students will study and perform classic and modern mariachi repertoire and will dive into the history to enrich their musical approach to the genre. Emphasis will be given to stylistic integrity as well as harmonic, and rhythmic accuracy plus improvisation techniques. 

Goals & Objectives

  • Create and maintain a positive community learning environment

  • Help students realize their maximum potential

  • Recognize, play and interpret the different styles within the genre

  • Improvise and groove over simple chord progressions (including; call and response)

  • Become excellent sight readers

  • Perform at least once per quarter
