Overview:

Banda Ensemble is a course designed to introduce the musician to the lively and dynamic sounds of Mexican, Banda music. 

Students will explore the unique history of Banda music, a sound deeply rooted in indigenous tradition and heavily influenced by German and Spanish culture during an early period of global exploration. Polyrhythmic Mexican Son, Polka, Valse, Cumbia and Danzon are among the styles that will be covered along with contemporary banda repertoire.

  • Create and maintain a positive community learning environment

  • Help students realize their maximum potential

  • Recognize, play and interpret the different styles authentically

  • Improvise and groove over basic chord progressions (including; call and response)

  • Become excellent sight readers

  • Perform at least once per quarter
