Overview:

The Music de Cuba ensemble, is an introductory course that explores the rich and diverse culture of Cuba through music and dance. Salsa, Son, Cha-cha-cha, Bolero, and Rhumba are among the many traditional styles of Afro-Cuban music that will be covered throughout the classes. Students will study the historical roots; percussion patterns pertaining to the style, as well as movement and dance to further enrich their understanding of the social and historical context of the music.

  • Create and maintain a positive community learning environment

  • Help students realize their maximum potential

  • Recognize, play and interpret the different styles authentically

  • Recognize and demonstrate different claves

  • Improvise and groove over basic chord progressions (including; call and response)

  • Become excellent sight readers

  • Perform at least once per quarter
